BAFTAs 2013: Stunning stars keep it simple in black

Braving the wind, rain and snow, some of the hottest names in Hollywood stepped out in London on Sunday night to celebrate the biggest British film event of the year.

But rather than showing off in the style stakes with elaborate creations, a host of leading ladies kept it simple as they opted for black numbers. Anne Hathaway, who scooped the Best Supporting Actress award for her role in Les Miserables, lead the style brigade, showing off her incredible physique in a black Burberry gown that featured stud detailing.

And Amy Adams was the epitome of old Hollywood glamour in a breathtaking Elie Saab lace gown with a delicate train. A bun and winged eyeliner completed the look.

Style queen Sarah Jessica Parker, who was on hand to present the Leading Male Actor award, had also chosen black Elie Saab. But in her typically quirky manner, she opted not to wear a dress, instead showing off a satin jumpsuit that perfectly flattered her pint-sized frame.

Taking a decidedly more sultry turn on the red carpet was Thandie Newton, who sported a lacy black Louis Vuitton number that she teamed with side swept curls and red lips.

Jennifer Lawrence

Meanwhile, other starlets had chosen to champion the monochrome trend that seems to be sweeping the showbiz world. All eyes were on Jennifer Lawrence who had, very sensibly, opted to pair a black coat over her white silk Dior gown to protect her from the less than favourable weather conditions.

And Ben Affleck's wife Jennifer Garner was picture perfect in a backless Roland Mouret colour block dress. Gemma Arterton, meanwhile, was monochrome magic in a floor-sweeping, black and white striped gown.

Jessica Chastain

Injecting a good dose of colour into the sea of black was Zero Dark Thirty star Jessica Chastain, whose dramatic cobalt blue asymmetrical Roland Mouret gown perfectly offset her porcelain complexion and fiery red locks.

She was joined by French beauty Marion Cotillard, who brightened up the red carpet with her neon yellow dress from Christian Dior.

Another super glamorous lady in attendance was Paloma Faith. The singer, who performed during the ceremony, sparkled in a heavily crystal-adorned dress with a matching hair accessory.
