Silver screen beauties defy cold with amazing glamour parade

As George Clooney said, the ladies had chosen fashion over warmth.

There were plenty of bare shoulders and décolletage in sight as Hollywood beauties and homegrown talents sashayed up the red carpet at the Baftas.

Leading the glamour brigade was Jessica Chastain. The flame-haired beauty from The Help looked every inch the screen starlet in a lamé creation with a billowing skirt by Oscar de la Renta.

"It's a big deal to be here - and to be a nominee is incredible," she enthused. "It's great the fact I get to walk next to George Clooney and Kenneth Brannagh... It's bizarre but wonderful."

Also channelling the metallic maiden look were Gillian Anderson, Emilia Fox and Christina Ricci, who confided to HELLO! Online that she wished had on her thermals.

Scarlet lady Penelope Cruz had pulled out all the stops in an amazing strapless Armani Prive gown.

Meanwhile, Mad Men's delicious secretary Christina Hendricks, looked stunning in floor-length Vivienne Westwood, with her husband Geoffrey Arend capturing the action for the family album.

Hot competition for Christina came from an unexpected quarter. Iron Lady Meryl Streep put in an unusually daring appearance in a corseted gown that gave her a fabulous hourglass silhouette.
