The 2017 BAFTAs once again attracted some of Hollywood's brightest stars with the likes of Emma Stone, Meryl Streep, Casey Affeck, Jamie Dornan and Emily Blunt attending the prestigious film ceremony. But there was one actor noticeably absent from the proceedings – Ryan Gosling. The 36-year-old had been expected to attend the event, having been nominated in the Best Actor category for his role in La La Land. But to the disappointment of his fans, he was missing on Sunday night - and now we know why.

"Ryan had a family matter to attend to," La La Land film producers told media backstage at the BAFTAs. "He is sorry not to be here this evening. He sends his appreciation and thanks for everything." At Sunday's ceremony, La La Land walked away with five BAFTAs in total, including the top prize for Best Film, and Best Actress for Emma. Ryan, however, missed out on the award in the Best Leading Male category to Casey Affleck for Manchester By The Sea.
Other big winners on the night included Viola Davis, who was named Best Supporting Actress for her role in Fences, and Dev Patel, who took home the Best Supporting Actor for Lion. Mel Brooks, meanwhile, was awarded the Academy Fellowship for his contribution to cinema by Prince William, who attended the awards with his wife, the Duchess of Cambridge.

Ryan is a father to two young daughters with actress Eva Mendes. The couple welcomed Esmeralda Amada in September 2014, and her little sister Amada Lee in April 2016. Drive star Ryan is also nominated for Best Actor at the Oscars later this month, on 26 February, and it's hoped that he will be able to make an appearance at that ceremony.
